Herb Grinder Fun Facts..... How do they work and what is the downside to using one?

Cannabis grinder facts everyone should be aware of if they want to get the most from their grinders and not waste their cannabis.

Grinder Fact #1

When Was The Herb Grinder Invented and By Who ?

The truth about who invented the original tobacco and herb grinder is not what everyone is posting on the web.

It took me hours to find out the real inventors, but now we have the correct information.

Okay here are the real inventors of the original herb or tobacco grinder.

  • It was invented in 1905, by William Henry Wingfield and John Balding, of Bort, Victoria, Australia.
  • The original patent number is #795,746
  • Original application was filed on April 19, 1905. Serial no. 256,453.

Wow, back then things got done much faster, even though we have all this fancy  technology.

It was filed in April and approved in July of the same year! Just 3 months time to get the patent.

The original didn’t have a chamber below to collect the tobacco after it was ground up, so it would just fall through some holes onto the table or plate for collection.

You can lookup the original patents and drawings online using the information we provided above.

  • So the inventor was NOT Lewis Heim who worked for The Ball & Bearing Roller Company as other people have been posting.

We wanted to make sure we were putting the actual truth out there and not just repeating false information.

How Did The Original Herb Grinder Work

  • The original grinder had an upper and lower section.
  • These sections had pointed nail like spikes on them and they were offset so they would not strike each other when rotated in opposite directions.
  • The lower section also had some holes for the ground up herb to fall through and could be collected as it fell through the lower sections holes.

Grinders made now days have another chamber to collect the ground up herb so it just doesn’t fall through the lower section onto the table or countertop.

Others also have yet another chamber below separated by a fine mesh screen.

This screen allows the finer kief to fall through and the larger herb to stay sitting on the screen until you use it.

What Are The Big Problems With The Grinder

The grinder is a simple device designed to grind, tear or cut cannabis buds into a smaller more packable state. To be rolled into a blunt or joint, or maybe to smoke in a pipe or bong.

The problem is that immediately after you grind it up, it starts to dry out. It gets really dry, really quick.

To compound this problem, I have found that almost everyone leaves some ground up cannabis in their grinders, sometimes for days.

Just leaving it in there til later that afternoon, just a few short hours later will make it much harsher when you smoke it again. Pay attention next time and you will see what I’m talking about.

Depending on how long you leave it in the grinder will determine how harsh it will be.  Dry weed is not good weed.

Here is a little mantra about dry weed.

  • “If you want a good high, Make sure the weed is not to dry”

The other problem with grinders is the quality of the machining and materials used.  You don’t want metal shavings in your weed. Most stuff coming from China is not the highest of quality.

The other problem is the cutting teeth on some grinders don’t do a very good job of shredding the weed.

The teeth are not sharp enough to pierce through the buds.  You have to almost crush the bud into the grinder to close the lid and start twisting.

If the teeth have blunt tops, then they will not work as good, trust me, I’ve used many grinders in the last 5 years.

How Is The UMIDO Grinder Different?

It’s Patent Pending for a special reason…

  • For starters Umido is the only grinder that will keep your cannabis fresh, even after it’s ground up and sitting in the grinder for days.
  • Umido is also the only grinder guaranteed to pay for itself and then continue to save you money and make your smoking experience even better.
  • And it’s the only herb grinder made, that allows you to infuse flavors into your ground up weed.

So you have a choice of just plain humidity or flavor infused humidity keeping your weed fresh until your next smoke session.

Umido is special because it allows you to keep your ground up herb at your desired moisture level for that perfect smoking experience.

How Does The UMIDO Grinder Work

Umido’s special design incorporates another upper chamber above the top teeth section in most grinders. See the picts at the bottom of this page

This upper section has some holes for air to travel down into the lower herb and kief collection chambers.

This upper chamber is designed to hold moisture beads or humidity control packets.

We supply eco friendly rechargeable moisture beads with every Umido grinder.  Enough to last you for a very long time.

We care about the earth and do not want to add to the garbage problems we already have to deal with.

The upper chamber can be closed off or left open to allow the most air to travel down and keep the herb fresher longer.

This keeps the ground herb from ever drying out.

We have left ground herb in the test grinders for over a month with no signs of mold.

The rest of the grinder works the same way, but we have also redesigned the cutting teeth so they work more efficiently.

We also made the screen replaceable in the event it gets damaged or you want a different mesh density to capture finer kief.

30 Day Umido Grinder Moisture and Smoke Test Results

Test Parameters

We took very dried out weed

We took some very dried out weed and wanted to see if we could make it smokeable again using the new Umido grinder.

We did the same test again with the pods in glass mason jars to see how fast the rehydrated. They worked great in that test as well.  More on that one later.

Test Parameters

Initial Smoke Test

Extremely Harsh As Predicated

Well, as could have been expected,.. but we had to do it for the sake of the test.

It sucked and made us all cough, the taste was not good. The high was okay and was the only good thing about the test smoke.

Initial Smoke Test

Starting The Test

1-2 Grams of Herb Ground Up and Left In The Grinder

Okay after clearing the taste from our mouths, we placed about a gram or two into the grinder and proceeded to grind it up.

We let it collect in the lower chamber and placed 8 beads in the upper moisture chamber to make sure it would get hydrated.

We placed the lid on the upper chamber and closed the grinder and let it sit just as I would normally do, including leaving some ground weed in the grinder.

Only before it would have been harsh as hell with no chance of rehydrating or rejuvenation.

Starting The Test

After 1 Day

Wow! Night and Day Difference

After the first day the weed was quite a bit moister.

It still wouldn’t pack well, but it was better.

Promising results so far!

Still wasn’t going to smoke it again, till it felt a little moister.

After 1 Day

After 4 Days

Way Less Harsh Than The Initial Smoke Test & A Good High

At the day 4 mark it was definitely like freshly cured weed again and would pack sufficiently to my liking.

We loaded up a bowl and gave it a try…..Wow was an understatement!

This was night and day difference, it was so much better than what went in 4 days prior.

It didn’t smoke like the same weed at all, now it was pleasurable and less harsh.

After 4 Days

After 30 Days

Even After 30 Days, It Showed No Signs of Mold

  • We checked it daily in the beginning and then every other day for 30 days.
  • No signs of mold were ever detected.
  • This may be due to the fact it was all ground up, so mold doesn’t form as easily as on the bud?
  • In any event the weed stayed fresh and quite smokable for over 30 days.
  • And it never even got close to drying out!
  • Umido is the ONLY grinder that can make the claim of keeping your weed fresh for days.
  • Plus it will pay for itself in actual cold hard cash and provide you with the best possible smoking experience.

We wanted to push the limits and see when mold would start, but in this case it never did.

This DOESN’T mean it’s mold free, it could be present in small spores and because of this we recommend not grinding the stems.

Also if you store your weed in bud form, then we would highly recommend using an accurate humidistat gauge to maintain the proper humidity levels.

For more in depth information about the science behind humidity control, click here.

For instance using an NACL mixture will maintain a relative humidity of around 75%. NACL is just plain table salt or Sodium Chloride.

But a constant 75% is to high and will allow mold to grow and you do not want to smoke molded weed, EVER! It can make you ill.

After 30 Days

Flavor Infusing Test

We Used Peppermint Essential Oils

Wow, the flavor was noticeable just after one day.

After 3 days it was very very good.

The peppermint just added to the dried out old weed and made it actually very nice indeed.

Flavor Infusing Test

Final Verdict

Test results were Unanimous

Everyone who tasted the flavored weed said it was by far better than the nasty stuff we had started with.

  • And the high was good as well, so it was a win on all fronts.
  • We successfully brought weed back to life.
  • The Lazarus effect for weed is possible with a simple Umido pod.
  • Add flavor if you desire to make it even better.
