Back in 1990 the Phillip Morris Company applied for a patent on a humidity control device. It was issued later in 1991.

That device would help keep cigarettes at the right humidity levels until they were opened and consumed.

The device used various mixtures of salts and other compounds to maintain a relative humidity level.

This mixture was then placed into a sealed pouch made from a vapor permeable paper, similar to Tyvek.

This packet would dry up in time and become useless, then being discarded into the garbage and landfills along with the millions of cigarette butts.

They are using the same basic principles of humidity control with cannabis. Aqueous solutions sealed in some type of pouches. Keep scrolling to learn more.

How They Keep Expensive Cigars Fresh

In a cigar humidor, they have for a long time used silica beads.

They have also developed many polymer beads and other polyglycol mixes to regulate the RH levels.

Some guys even swear by certain types of kitty litter, which by the way happens to be pure silica crystals in raw form.

A Humidor is usually made of wood and is semi sealed and light proof.  It has a space to hold some type of humidification puck or box filled with silica beads.

This humidor must be seasoned and pre-humidified to the set point you will be using.

For example, if you are using the RH 70% beads, then you would pre-season to that level of humidity first, before putting in the cigars and humidity control beads.

Then you would be able to maintain the cigars at the 70% RH.

The system that has worked the best, with the least amount of hassles, has been the silica beads.

And since they were natural, they have always been eco friendly.

Especially the ones that have been pre-conditioned in some way to maintain a certain RH level.

The pre-conditioned Lithium Chloride coated ones are the exact beads we use in our HCP’s. They are the best, without exception. They are guaranteed.

This special coating helps the silica release its moisture. Without this coating, it would only absorb moisture.

To Regenerate or Not

Many people online claim you can just regenerate their beads without fully understanding how the process even works.

You cannot just spritz them with water and assume they will now be back at their original RH% set point from the factory.

They use precise calibrated equipment in sealed containers to get the RH set point they desire.

Here’s a little fact, most of the stuff they are selling on eBay is just repackaged kitty litter.  The silica crystal stuff without the clay for clumping.  Use at your own risk, the stuff I measured was at 83% out of the bag no water added yet.

Without the Lithium Chloride coating, it is very hard to get it to reach an equilibrium.

There is a reason it took chemist to develop the method and precise amounts needed to coat the silica.

It’s because of this coating, that the silica can now be pre-conditioned precisely to a specific RH% level. And it will be able to hold it indefinitely in the perfect environment.

Pretty amazing stuff, I’m glad someone figured that stuff out for us.

If you do regenerate some silica beads without a hygrometer, you run the risk of over saturation.

This will cause the RH level to be much higher than what you wanted, leading to mold problems.

The company guarantees their beads will maintain a RH level as long as you do not rewet them. Once they are to dry or wet, if you want their guarantees, you have to buy new beads from them, factory pre-conditioned.

We are working on the basic mathematics and calculations to give people a starting point when it comes to regenerating their beads.

You would then just weigh the beads you have in the HCP and add a predetermined amount of water to the beads to bring it back to a close approximation of the initial RH starting point.

As an example, 20 grams of beads once completely dried out might require 1ml of water to be added and that’s it or it could be just .5ml, this is what we are working on so you have a more accurate point to start from.

You will just need a hygrometer which you probably will already have in one of your storage jars.

It will tell you when you have reached the right level of RH%.

The Truth And Nothing But The Truth

After spending days pouring over various patents and scientific sites learning just how humidity control works.

This is what I found out.  Most of the stuff you read is not the full story or is hyped in some way.

They tell you all about the great results they got in their perfectly created test world environment.

But, they forget to mention, we probably won’t get the same results, because we don’t live in a perfect test environment to start with.

This was no different.  For example in order for any of those disposable humidity control packs to work, the case or container it is going to be placed into must already be at that humidity level or close to it, or else it will not work as well, if at all.

So you have to spend more money and get more packs to pre-humidify the case. You can see how they will get more expensive over time and pollute our world even more in the process.

Most of these claims are made in a perfectly controlled environment.  An environment we do not live in daily, so we will never see those types of results.

Here is the bottom line.

The packets such as Boveda, Integra and any types that use an aqueous mixture will dry out. And they cannot be regenerated. 

The company we get our beads from told us they tested a Boveda pack and it went dry in one day and was hard as a brick.

By the way, do not attempt to regenerate a Boveda type packet, because it will over absorb moisture and will then be over 98% RH.

These are purely throw away items and they start to add up quickly. They are in the business of making money, so the more you go through, the more money they make.

Compare that to the pre-conditioned, Lithium Chloride coated silica beads that have been shown to last for years, not days.

  • They are 100% Natural
  • Only Silica and Lithium Chloride (a salt)

The silica beads can also be regenerated if you choose too. And then, they will last another few years.

We don’t care about making a few extra bucks, if the environment is going to suffer in the process and hopefully you care as well.
